Can Family and Friends Review Your Book on Amazon?

Many new authors want to start with the people closest to them. It feels natural to ask family and friends to review a new book on Amazon. But this is one of the riskiest places to build early social proof.

Amazon wants reviews to reflect independent customer opinions. Close personal relationships can make a review look biased, even if the person really read the book.

Why Close Reviews Can Be A Problem

A family member, roommate, business partner, close friend, or anyone with a clear personal connection may not look independent. If Amazon connects accounts, addresses, payment methods, or behavior patterns, the review can be removed.

That does not mean every friendly reader is bad. It means authors should be careful about relying on their inner circle for Amazon reviews.

What To Do Instead

Ask family and friends to help in other ways. They can share the launch post, recommend the book privately, join your newsletter, or introduce you to readers outside your close circle.

For Amazon reviews, focus on advance readers, newsletter subscribers, genre communities, beta readers, and people who have no personal stake in the book's success.

The Simple Rule

If the relationship would make a stranger question the review, do not make that person part of your Amazon review plan.

Real reader trust grows slower, but it lasts longer.
